By Wink on May 7th, 2008

See, it was easy deciding to go to Red Hook. I’ve been drinking their ESB for years. LUV IT! And the wife and I happen to be in the neighborhood so, what the hell. Unfortunately finding the place is nearly impossible. I guess it would have helped to stop and ask directions, but being a [...]

Freeze Beer Instanly

Magic Hat and Pyramid are Merging

This is big news in the craft brew world. I’ve had Magic Hat IPA on occaision and found it deliciously hoppy. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of wheat beer and so only by Pyramid on the rare occasion I find the IPA somewhere. nesAnywayz, here’s the press release.

Kolsch Kegging

I kegged my Kolsch today after about eight weeks in the fermenter. The last five weeks or so it’s been sitting at about 40 degrees. My major concern at this point is the cloudiness. I’ve never used any clarifying agents or anything like that. And all of my beer has been just a little cloudy. [...]

Spontaneous Pale

So I brewed my first batch with the Partial Mash method I discovered at BYO. I had ordered the grain for the Strauss in the Haus Vienna Lager, what would have been my first lager as it happens. But I hadn’t planned on it taking so long for my chest freezer to be delivered. It [...]

Kegging for the first time?

I’m just ordered my first kegging system. I’m excited! Too bad I don’t have any beer to put in it right now.

Two Brothers’ Hop Juice

I finally got a taste. Lord almighty, the taste. It’s still hanging on … and I love it.
On Saturday my wife and I found ourselves in the neighborhood of one of three full-scale craft breweries in the Chicagoland area: Two Brothers Brewing Company. Their pale ale, The Bitter End, is widely available in local stores. [...]

Beer Wagon: 2.29.08

A special leap-day edition of the beer wagon. Is Philly really the best beer-town in America? Stephen Beaumont and Don Russell debate. I think I want to build my own stir plate, after seeing Jeff’s. 8 million barrels. That’s a lot of beer; it is also how much craft beer was produced in 2007. Joe [...]

Portland Chiropractor

I’ve only ever had one experience with a Portland chiropractor. I was suffering from a pain in my neck that would not go away. I had tried muscle relaxants, physiotherapy, aromatherapy, everything but a chiropractor. Finally, in agony, I went to my wife’s chiropractor. I lay down on the table and he gently massaged the muscles of my neck. He asked me if I was ready, then gave my neck a twist and wrench. There was a loud cracking sound that scared me so badly that I literally screamed the F word loudly enough to be heard in the waiting room. I twiddled my fingers and toes, and was thrilled that I was not paralyzed, as I was sure he had broken my neck. I quickly paid and never went back, even though my neck was now completely better.

Giving a wine gift baskets can be a tricky thing, if you’re serious about giving someone a decent experience. Commercial baskets generally feature two bottles of average wine, and the rest of the basket is filled with snack foods. It takes little time and effort to build your own and is hardly more expensive. First, find a couple of wines that are complimentary in the sense that they are the same type, or from the same winery, not just the usual one white and one red wine combo. Do a little research and find out what the vintners recommend to go along with it. Buy that specific cheese or other fun snack and tuck that in there too. Add a few touches specific to your friend’s interests and you have a gift basket anyone would be glad to get.

It was my birthday this past weekend and I received the most wonderful gift – a large wine basket . It was given to me by one of my close friend who knows the varietals that I like to drink and more importantly what I have not recently tried. It included a combination of wines from Australia, Chile, Portugal, and Italy, and all of the wines were not the typical wines that you would buy at your local liquor store. It was well thought out, and wines were superb, rated high by professional, and the basket included several wine trinkets like glass identifiers, pour spouts, and wine tasting cards. Evidently wine gift baskets make outstanding gifts!

Wine Clubs

Wine clubs are a good option for people wanting an introduction to the complex world of wine. Depending on the club, one can get a quick education in basic wine terminology, taste, and price structure. Rather like book clubs, wine clubs generally are non-judgemental gatherings that promote sharing, and where there are no dumb questions. They also provide social opportunities for singles and couples, with the added benefit of alcohol as a social lubricant. Since people bring bottles of wine for the club members to share, one can sample a good number of different vintages in a single evening, with the cost spread out amongst the members. This feature also eliminates buyer’s remorse, as a bad bottle won’t have to be choked down by one or two people.

Wine Baskets at Thanksgiving

I like wine and various gourmet products so I decided to order a couple wine gift baskets for my parents and have them shipped out for Thanksgiving.  By doing this, I have guaranteed that I will have some good wine to sip on with my parents versus the $5 wines they typically try and serve me.  I don’t mean to sound rude, I appreciate that they host Thanksgiving for me and my siblings, I just want to enjoy some good wine while I am there.

The other items that are include in the wine gift baskets include some nuts, chocolates, and other good snacks which I am sure everyone will enjoy too.  I can’t wait to see what wines I get.

Wine at Restaurants is too expensive

red wineLike many of my friends I enjoy eating out and trying new wines.  The problem with order wine out is that it is so expensive. I don’t really enjoy paying $100 for a $50 dollar bottle of wine. I somewhat get the economics of running a restaurant and understand the up-charge on the bottle of wine, but I still don’t like it.  Given that I still enjoying a good glass or two wine when I go out to dinner, what was I to do.

Well the solution was pretty simple.  I recently joined a best-in-breed wine of the month club and just resigned myself to the fact that I would be paying the corkage fees at restaurants.  The math was pretty simple. I joined this great wine club that charges me about $100 monthly for some tasty $50 bottles of wine.  The restaurants I frequent charge around $15 – $25 for corkage.  Even at the high end of fees of $25, I still come out $25 ahead versus if I bought a similar bottle of wine at the restaurant.

A Great Wine Club

I can be honest in the anonymity of the internet….I love alcohol.  Wine is a personal favorite because in each and every bottle, you never know exactly what you’re going to get.  I am a member of a great wine club here in San Francisco where everyone brings a bottle and we get to try literally 50+ wines once a month….the best part is that I can walk from my house, so no DUI here!  If you want something fun to do with friends, I think starting a wine club makes a lot of sense!
