Yazoo City

I was sent to Nashville, TN on business this past weekend. I spent pivotal childhood years in small town east of the Music City but was definitely too young to drink. I was pre-hopped so-to-speak. Though … my step-father did give me my first sampling of the malty nector at age seven. Still, I was far too young to appreciate its inherent goodness.

So, needless to say, on this trip I was anxious to get my hands on some good Tennessee-crafted brew. But as often happens, I got too bogged down in meetings to visit the various local brew stops and had to settle for the fare available at the local beer store.

(Incidentally, I find it extremely odd that the state of Tennessee forbids beer and liquor to be sold in the same store. After some five minutes scouring the liquor stor, the attendant kindly directed us around the corner to a store that sold beer along side cigars and marijuana paraphernalia. Curious? Is this what Tennesseans think of beer?)

At any rate, I stumbled across Yazoo’s Pale Ale (presumably named for the river that cuts through TN). It is definitely hoppy and has good body with frothy texture. But unfortunately I found it to be a little weak on color and flavor. Nevertheless, it satisfied my need for local brew and whetted my taste buds enough to look forward to visiting to the brewery itself to sample their various other styles. I hear the Dos Perros Ale is particularly worth the trip.

I don’t know when I’ll make it back to Nashville, but when I do … I’ll definitely Yazoo. (Yeah, that was cheesy, but I just couldn’t resist.)
