The Drinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down/ Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee/ Superior, they say, never gives up her dead/ When the gales of November come early.

These are the closing words of Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” Great Lakes Brewing Co., pays tribute to the tragic event in a different way, by brewing an English-style porter as deep and smooth as the cold waters of Lake Superior. With an IBU of just 37, it is moderately bitter and the Willamette hops lend it a mellow flavor and aroma. The head pours thick and creamy, as good as any I’ve had. The body is full, but light enough to leave you ready for another. As you can tell, I like this beer … perhaps my favorite American porter. Cheers.
