Rock Bottom: Strong Belgian Rye Pale Ale
I don’t like wheat beer generally. I can’t explain it. There’s something about the taste of wheat based beer that just doesn’t sit right with me. But since I’ve been brewing beer I’ve also been trying to get used to the style. I figure there has to be something worth appreciating about it right?
Monday night, I stopped by Rock Bottom Brewery in Chicago for an after-work “meeting” with a couple colleagues of mine. Feeling, a little adventurous, possibly in honor of the snow storm brewing outside. I decided to try the Strong Belgian Rye Pale Ale. Wow! I was surprised a wheat beer could bring so much to the table. The head was nice and easy, a solid half inch. The body had weight without being heavy. The bitter was serious. I didn’t know wheat could be brewed so serious. Over all, it was pretty damn good … for wheat-based beer.
